The da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgical System – the most advanced system in use anywhere – is changing the way patients experience surgery at Ingalls Hospital. The highly advanced system is designed to provide surgeons with enhanced capabilities during minimally invasive surgery, including high-definition 3-D vision, a magnified view of the body, greater dexterity and unmatched precision.

The surgeon controls the da Vinci System, which translates his or her hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments inside your body. Though it is often called a "robot," da Vinci cannot act on its own. Instead, the surgery is performed entirely by your doctor.

This next-generation robotic surgical system can be used across a wide spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures, and it has been optimized for highly complex, multi-quadrant surgeries in which instruments must be able to reach up and down and across large areas of the body, such as the abdomen or chest.

Tiny Incisions. Less pain. Quicker Recovery.

With the da Vinci Xi, complex operations can be performed by working through several small 8-12 mm incisions, replacing long abdominal incisions. Potential benefits to the patient include:

  • Decreased pain
  • Less blood loss
  • Minimal risk of infection
  • Decreased severity of hernia formation
  • A faster recovery, compared to traditional open surgery.

The da Vinci Xi robot translates the surgeon's hand movements into refined, more precise movements of small instruments inside the patient's body. Although visually similar to standard laparoscopic instruments, the robotic instruments have the additional advantage of being articulated. This allows the instruments not only to open and close but to fully turn and twist, allowing movements similar to the human hand and wrist. But unlike the hand, these instruments are much smaller. In fact, many of the jaws of the tools are similar or shorter in length than the fingernail, allowing for very small and precise incisions.

What's more, the system's 3-D, high-definition vision system provides surgeons a very clear and highly magnified view. The surgeons' hands and eyes are virtually extended into the patient.
